Father Gerard Keane S. J., ordained a Jesuit priest in 1958, arrived in Singapore in 1960 and was the second college chaplain of CJC. He served the college in this capacity for 22 years (1980 – 2001). He passed away on 27 November 2018 at Assisi Hospice, Singapore.

Ms Pauline Chua, HOD English and CJ alumni, remembers: “He was a gentle, kind and supportive presence at every college event, ceremony and retreat, and he also provided us with spiritual direction for our religious programmes. The door to his office was always open, and Father Keane was always willing to listen and understand whoever needed him. He will be very much missed by those of us who knew him, and those who have been touched by his deep spiritual knowledge.”

Ivan Yeo from CJC Class of 1997 wrote in the commemorative book prepared for Father Keane’s Golden Jubilee celebrations: "The regular morning Masses with you as our ever faithful chaplain was always a joy. You taught us so much about our Catholic faith, not as a doctrine or law, but as a living faith and relationship with God our Heavenly Father. Your wise and fatherly ways helped me to relate to God as our loving father, and that has remained my vision of God ever since."

CJC has honoured Father Keane’s contribution with The Father Gerard Keane Award, launched in 2007, presented annually to the student who made the most significant contribution to the continuing development and strengthening of the Catholic spirit in the college.

His funeral mass will be presided by His Grace Archbishop William Goh on 30 November, 3.00PM, at the Church of St Ignatius, Singapore.
