Literature in English

About the Programme

The CJC Literature programme seeks to develop in students the skills of close reading, perspective taking, and thinking critically about the literary texts they read.

 

We hope that students acquire, through the programme, an open-minded disposition comfortable with productive ambiguity, independent insight, and the ability to communicate their ideas logically and effectively.

 

Beyond the syllabus, we aim to nurture in students an enduring love for literature that is grounded in critical thought and appreciation of the text.

Microlessons

First lesson sample: this video is part of an actual lecture delivered on George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan. Lectures complement tutorials by modelling intellectual engagement and inquiry.

 

 

Second lesson sample: this audio file is part of a supplementary Podcast, an example of learning resources that augment core materials and lessons. In this short audio file, the lecturer meditates on one scene in William Shakespeare's Hamlet, using it as a springboard to consider the themes of corruption, misogyny, and the connection between the particular and the universal.

 

Enrichment: Litera

Litera - Cover.JPG

Litera: a variant spelling of Littĕra in Latin, denoting a written sign. In the plural, Literae/Littĕrae denotes Literature, as a collection of signs.

 

Litera is the department’s literary festival, featuring creative works by our students based on their A-Level texts.

 

Just as letters make up Literature, these student pieces come together as discrete works adding to a larger corpus of creativity. Among the pieces we have seen: some are performances, or scripts for performances; others are poetry or prose in meditation of the source texts; still others are visual, as if in reverse ekphrasis of their texts.

 

The programme is open to all H1 and H2 Literature students. Selected pieces will be featured on the Litera website, and student artists will be invited to host dialogue sessions with their peers, sharing about their creative vision, process, and learning. Student visitors, in turn, have a chance to dialogue with the creators of these pieces, in an open and intelligent exchange.

Curriculum Details

H1 Literature in English


Paper 1: Reading Literature (100%)

  Students will undertake 1 lecture and 3-4 tutorials in a two-week cycle. Group discussion, tutorial presentations, and investigative tasks are integral to the Literature classroom in CJC.

       Students will read the following texts over the two-year course:

o   Poetry: a compendium of poems, including Singapore poems, on a range of topics, curated by the department

o      Prose: F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby (Oxford World’s Classics)

o      Drama: George Bernard Shaw, Saint Joan (Methuen Drama)

 

H2 Literature in English

Paper 1: Reading Literature (50%)

  Students will undertake 1 lecture and 3-4 tutorials in a two-week cycle. Group discussion, tutorial presentations and investigative tasks are integral to the Literature classroom in CJC. 

       Students will read the following texts over the two-year course:

o   Poetry: a compendium of poems, including Singapore poems, on a range of topics, curated by the department

o       Prose: F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby (Oxford World’s Classics)

o      Drama: George Bernard Shaw, Saint Joan (Methuen Drama)

 

Paper 3: The Mind and Self in Literature (50%)

       Paper 3 is a topic-based elective paper.

       Students will undertake 2 lectures and 2-3 tutorials in a two-week cycle. Group discussion, tutorial presentations and investigative tasks are integral to the Literature classroom in CJC.

       Students will read the following texts over the two-year course:

o   Selected poems, prose excerpts and drama excerpts related to the topic

o   Edward Albee, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Vintage Classics)

o   William Shakespeare, Hamlet (Heinemann)

o   James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (Oxford World Classics)

       Section A: Poetry (Unseen)

o   Select 1 out of 2 questions

       Section B: Prose (The Great Gatsby)

o   Select either (a) essay or (b) passage-based questions

       Section C: Drama (Saint Joan)

o   Select either (a) essay or (b) passage-based questions

       Duration: 3 hours

 

H2 Literature in English

 

Paper 1: Reading Literature (9509 / 01)

       Section A: Poetry Comparison (Unseen)

o   Select 1 out of 2 questions

       Section B: Prose (The Great Gatsby)

o   Select either (a) essay or (b) passage-based questions

       Section C: Drama (Saint Joan)

o   Select either (a) essay or (b) passage-based questions

       Duration: 3 hours

 

Paper 3: The Mind and Self in Literature (9509 / 03)

       Section A: Unseen

o   Select 1 out of 2 questions based on poetry, prose or drama

       Section B: Set Text Comparison

o   Select 1 out of 2 questions

o   The question will require students to compare two texts they have studied.

o   The texts chosen for Section B cannot be used in Section C.

       Section C: Single Text Essay Question

o   Select 1 question from a choice of 6 questions (2 questions per text will be set)

o   The text chosen for Section C cannot be used in Section B.

       Duration: 3 hours

H3 Literature in English

       This will be offered to students who display exceptional ability and interest in the    further study of Literature.

     Students will write an independent research essay on a literary topic of their        choice, comparing three texts written in English by three different authors.

  Guidelines: SEAB approval for research topic required; tutors provide some    guidance in line with SEAB restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is Literature at O-Level required to take Literature at A-Level?

Experience of Literature at O-Level gives students some advantage but is not a pre-requisite for A-Level Literature. In both H1 and H2 Literature, we provide students a foundation in literary study, from the use of literary methods to the shaping of an interpretation.

 

2. What is the difference between H1 and H2 Literature?

H1 students read only Paper 1, while H2 students read both Paper 1 and Paper 3. Literature students are expected to perform close reading of unseen and set texts, regardless of whether they are H1 or H2 students. This involves analysis of literary methods and effects. Mere paraphrasing or narration of the text does not count as analysis.

 

In Paper 1, H1 students study the same two texts as H2 students, attend the same Paper 1 lectures and take a similar examination. H1 students however are not required to demonstrate comparison skills in Section A (unseen poetry).
